Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
