Sadly, it's true that millions of people make the decision to operate a vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. Doing this not only puts one's life at risk and puts passengers at risk also, but being caught driving while impaired (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will more often than not result in serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and even incarceration. Sometimes someone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying substance abuse challenge. A legal court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug treatment instead of other serious consequences for his or her crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in alcohol and drug treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eliminate other consequences from the crime, but sometimes decrease the degree of such penalties to some great extent. Particularly if the individual willingly takes part in alcohol and drug treatment and is a first time offender. Research indicates that a large percentage of people who do receive drug treatment because of a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for comparable charges later on.
