Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for each person to ensure that their unique challenges can be addressed in rehab.
