Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own personal challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
