Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own personal challenges can be addressed in rehab.
