Offering gender-specific treatment services has proven very helpful in situations where conventional rehabilitation settings have fallen short, such as dealing with situations within a women's life that happen to be unique and painful. Such troubles may have to do with sexual abuse, physical trauma, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, or another serious issues that happen to be specific to women. Research has shown that women can also get embroiled in abusing drugs more readily than men, and so are more vulnerable to illness because of dependency issues than males as a result. Due to duties in the home, women also tend to postpone trying to find and undergoing treatment, a situation which can lead to catastrophe. Being mindful of this, treatment services for women are designed so that a women's needs are the focus and priority. Much like coed centers, alcohol and drug treatment centers which provide rehabilitation services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women target both general and gender specific issues who have brought on their drug or alcohol use. Women also may take advantage of the positive support from their female peers, and some centers that offer rehab services to women provide client beds for their young children.
