Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
