Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
