Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for everybody so that their unique problems can be handled in rehab.
