Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be very helpful in circumstances where standard treatment settings have fallen short, including dealing with situations in the women's life which can be distinctive and painful. Such concerns may pertain to sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family members and being a mother, or another serious issues that happen to be specific to women. Research shows that women may also become involved in substance abuse more readily than men, and so are more predisposed to sickness as a consequence of drug abuse issues than males consequently. Due to responsibilities in the home, women also tend to postpone looking for and undergoing treatment, a circumstance which can lead to catastrophe. That said, rehab services for women are designed so that a women's needs would be the focus and priority. Much like coed facilities, drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs which provide treatment services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women focus on both standard and gender specific issues which may have prompted their drug or alcohol use. Women also benefit from the positive support from other female peers, and several centers which provide treatment services to women also provide client beds for their young children.
