Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody so that their own challenges can be addressed in treatment.
