Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
