Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for everybody so that their particular problems can be remedied in rehab.
