Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
