Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has proven worthwhile in situations where standard rehab settings have not meet expectations, including coping with situations within a women's life which are distinctive and distressing. Such difficulties may have to do with sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, or other really serious issues which are specific to women. Research has shown that women also can get involved in substance abuse more readily than men, and so are more predisposed to sickness as a result of addiction issues than males as a result. Due to responsibilities in the home, women also tend to postpone looking for and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can be a catalyst for disaster. That said, rehab services for women are designed to ensure a women's needs will be the concentration and priority. Just like coed programs, alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers which offer rehabilitation services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a starting point. Following this step, counselors help women give attention to both basic and gender-specific issues which may have triggered their drug abuse. Women also may take advantage of the positive support from their female peers, and some centers which provide rehab services to women offer client beds for their children.
