Unfortunately, it is a fact that millions of people actually choose to drive an automobile while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Doing so not simply puts one's life in danger and puts passengers in danger at the same time, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will more often than not result in serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and also incarceration. Often times anyone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying drug abuse issue. The court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug treatment instead of other severe penalties for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in drug rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender might not exactly completely eradicate other consequences from the crime, but could decrease the degree of such consequences to a large degree. Particularly if the person willingly participates in drug rehab and is also a first time offender. Studies show that a large proportion of people who do receive drug rehab because of a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for similar charges later on.
