Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique problems can be handled in treatment.
