Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual so that their own challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
