Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their particular challenges can be remedied in rehab.
