Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each person so that their own problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
