Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each person so that their particular problems can be handled in treatment.
