Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
