Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their particular problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
