Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be very useful in situations where standard rehab facilities have fallen short, such as coping with situations in the women's life which can be unique and traumatic. Such issues may pertain to sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, or another serious issues that are specific to women. Research shows that women may also become involved in substance abuse more readily than men, and therefore are more predisposed to illness as a consequence of addiction issues than males consequently. Due to obligations in the home, women also tend to postpone searching for and undergoing treatment, a situation which can be a catalyst for catastrophe. Being mindful of this, rehab services for women are designed to ensure that a women's needs are the focus and priority. Much like coed programs, alcohol and drug rehab centers that provide rehab services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a starting point. After this step, counselors help women target both general and gender-specific problems which may have brought on their drug or alcohol use. Women also may take advantage of the beneficial support from other female peers, plus some programs that provide rehabilitation services to women offer client beds for her children.
