Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may trigger drug use, or dangerous sexual behavior due to substance abuse could have caused the individual to contract the illness. Individuals who have HIV/AIDS, either as a result of their drug abuse or as a pre-existing condition prior to their drug abuse problem, often require treatment services tailor-made in order to meet their particular demands and problems. Many of these challenges are physical in nature, due to the fact that substance abusers with HIV/AIDS almost never take care of themselves and take the appropriate medications they need to maintain their health. As a result, they arrive to rehab in very poor health and this will have to be addressed as a priority while also addressing other important concerns. Aside from the obvious requirement to offer medical solutions during rehabilitation, individuals with HIV/AIDS will also need to address deeper problems which prompted their drug or alcohol use. Frequently, individuals have conditions in their lives which are purely environmental which may have caused them to use drugs or alcohol, such as oppressive conditions within their lives or damaging relationships. These are the concerns which rehabilitation counselors will focus on as part of HIV/AIDS rehabilitation services.
