Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse.
