Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be remedied in treatment.
