Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
