Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be addressed in treatment.
