Unfortunately, the simple truth is that tens of millions of people decide to operate a vehicle while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Doing so not only puts one's life at risk and puts passengers in danger as well, but being caught driving while impaired (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually result in serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases prison time. Sometimes anyone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying substance abuse issue. The court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug and alcohol rehabilitation as an alternative to other extreme consequences because of their crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in drug and alcohol rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender might not completely eliminate other consequences from the crime, but could decrease the degree of such consequences to a large degree. Particularly if the individual willingly participates drug treatment and is a first time offender. Studies have shown that a large percentage of individuals who do receive alcohol and drug rehabilitation for a DUI/DWI offense avoid the courts for similar charges down the road.
