Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their particular problems can be treated in treatment.
