Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual so that their unique challenges can be addressed in treatment.
