Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own personal problems can be handled in rehab.
