Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal challenges can be handled in rehab.
