Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their own personal challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
